Media Release
Hi Everyone,
I hope you all had a nice weekend. I was in Brisbane last weekend for a seminar. It was a very interesting seminar and i learnt a lot. I really do advise attending seminars whenever you can because you learn things that never get discussed otherwise and you have a chance to network. This networking helps form strong industry bonds and friendships that can last a lifetime.

As you know, water is fast becoming a golden commodity. Over the coming years Australia has to make some hard decisions as to how we are going to handle our looming water deficiency. This article from Sydney Water is what I suspect to be the first of many such ideas.

Perhaps our catch-cry could be "Save a dollar, stop a drip". Perhaps if this was practiced as a sobriety test at the local pub it could catch on. It could certainly end up with some interesting and memorable abreviations! My mind boggles....LOL....

Group Training Australia - Apprenticeships and Traineeships made easier

Group Training Australia - Apprenticeships and Traineeships made easier
Hi Everyone,

Last night at Rotary our guest speaker was a field Officer from the EastCoast Group Training centre. I already knew about these group apprenticeship schemes but was quite surprised to see that not a lot of others did. So it got me thinking that there are probably many of you out there who aren't aware of what they could offer you too.

I remember when I started in the Building Industry how we had Apprentice Masters and all the hassles that some of the apprectices caused. Many of you have probably done your apprecticeships too through a later version of the apprenticeship schemes but in todays world, many of the hassles have been removed and are now taken care of by others who's sole purpose is to look after apprentices.

So, as Australia is lacking in skill shortages, some of you may be interested in helping to train an apprentice? If so, I would suggest contacting your nearest Group Training Office and having a chat with them. I'm quite sure they would be quite delighted to hear from you.

Warmly as always,

Construction Insurance, Bonding, and Risk... - Google Book Search

Construction Insurance, Bonding, and Risk... - Google Book Search
Hi Everyone,

Just a quick 'heads up' this morning on Insurance. Are you properly covered? Do you know precisley what you are covered for? Most of us just accept what our Insurance Rep tells us but unless it's in writing - forget it! Your best protection always is to know it for yourself - and to have it clearly stated by your insurance Company in writing!

McGraw-Hill are known as 'the experts' in the construction industry publishing world so this information is 'legit' and as Insurance is a world-wide global industry, it will also apply here in Australia. But get it in writing to make sure!

Have fun everyone - and remember to play nicely! :-)

Kill-joy, aren't I?

yellow pages advertising: secrets that boost yellow page ad response.

yellow pages advertising: secrets that boost yellow page ad response.
Hi Everyone,
Well, I'm back on my soapbox.

Yellow Pages are the most essential of advertising places for all trades working in the Building Industry. Why? Because when people have a problem they need fixed NOW, they turn straight to the YP if they don't have any other means of contacting the required tradesperson.

The only way you can beat the YP is to have your business card in their 'hot-little-hands' already. How do you do that? By going up each and every street you are working in to deposit a business card into the letterbox's. For this use, they don't have to be 'prime' cards - just professionally produced cards. I really don't recommend home-done cards on your PC's because these are rarely professional looking so are not perceived as being valuable. Where if you have a 'proper' business card even though it is on inferior, low-cost card done by a printer, it is still seen to be more valuable than any flyer or anything else not professionally produced.

But if you don't want to do that, then make sure your YP Ad works for you. What makes a good YP Ad? Then read all about them BEFORE your next YP Ad becomes due. If you have good information, you are more likely to make better decisions and save yourself time and money.

Punch Clock - Time clock software that replaces your paper time cards

Punch Clock - Time clock software that replaces your paper time cards
Hi Everyone,

I hope you have all had a good week. We've had a few wet days here at Alstonville, Northern NSW - but I'm not complaining. I know there are too many of you out there who desperately need some rain.

Can you remember the old bundy clock? I remember too well having to clock on and off - but worse was to come when I had to do the pays from them! Groan - I'm so glad those days are behind me. :-)

Those who do the pays now have it too easy. Just look at this computerised version. How far we've come LOL

Enjoy your weekend, relax, watch the footy, kick back and get ready for next week.

Cheers,

Welding Secrets Revealed

Welding Secrets Revealed
Hi Everyone,

I've been a bit slako this week. Sorry! Truth is, I've been doing a lot of research through the 'net to see what I could find in the way of DIY info for the DIY market. I found this info and thought it could be of interest to those of you who are into the DIY phase.

Over the time I have been working with you blokes I know that there are many of you 'out there' who do the same as everyone else and attempt to do your own work. No-one's blaming you - the old saying "A penny saved, is a penny earned" has a lot of merit. I'm all into saving money wherever I can too. But it can still get you into strive every-now-and-then, right? :-)

Welding is one of those things that can get you into trouble real quick so I thought I would let you know - that there is someone out there who knows like I do that the DIY home-handyman market is just waiting for some videos/info packs from you professionals as to how to do these jobs.

Enjoy and remember to take all the right safety precautions,

Warmly,

EveryDay Cheapskates

EveryDay Cheapskates
Hi Everyone,
I am a regular receiver of this newsletter for the simple reason it always has good information, advice or ideas. And the recipes are yummy too- now hang on- don't click off. This is not about a good cooking recipe BUT IT IS A RECIPE FOR GOOD CUSTOMER SERVICE.

The kind of customer service that you want to have all your customers talking about in places where you wouldn't ever hear about the chatter. This is what "word-of-mouth-advertising" is all about. The benefits are too numerous to mention and it's something you have heard me rant about numerous times. And I'll probably still be ranting about it several decades from now.

I work on the principle that we should attempt excellence in everything we do - just so we get that bit closer every time. It's a bit like making that perfect join for a carpenter or the perfect design for pavers.

If we aim for perfect customer service every time then we will get that much closer to achieving it, won't we? It's commonly called the 'law of averages' and the percentages are in our favour!

Zoomerang Survey

Zoomerang
Hi Everyone!
I am assuming you all survived the great footy match between Australia and NZ last Saturday night? Wasn't it a great match!! Too bad the Kiwi's were just that much better than us - that time :-) - But we'll see on the next round, huh? Congratulations to our Kiwi members. You were just too good for us that time. We'll see who wins the next bout though hey?

Matt Stevens has become our friend and his Construction Contractors Digest I would put in the category as "Advised Reading" It is important to stay industry current no matter what Trade you are. This digest provides a wider view of what's happening and I'm an avid reader every month. There is a survey in this months digest that may help you so I've blogged it for your convenience.

His book "Managing a Construction Firm on just 24 Hours a day" which is due for publication on 27th September will be available through Constructing Profits so mark your diaries now.

Hope you all have a profitable week and remember to watch OH&S practices. I am hearing of too many 'slip-ups' due to trying to take shortcuts. You'll get the job done faster if you only have to do it once - and that's the right way!

Warmly,

Electrical Contractor

Electrical Contractor
Hi Everyone,

Here's a very interesting article on power sources. I have been saying for many years we need to look at researching alternate fuels viabilty and it would seem others are now thinking along the same lines. We have so many choices to explore before we even consider Nuclear but the vested interests seem to have the loudest voices and the fatter wallets....or control opinions of more people. Grrr...

But if we the public, and consumers of this essential product, let our politicians know our thoughts through us speaking out, then we might get some funding for exploring some of these fuel alternatives and have them properly researched so we are sure of the capabilities or limitations of each possibility.

Ethanol fuel is quickly gaining acceptance through necessity but the sad thing is - it really is a true alternative - to petroleum fuel. So when you are at the petrol pump, give some thought as to why it hasn't been used much more often as an alternative fuel for our vehicles.

Just think, if we had been doing prior research and production, we wouldn't be having to pay the current prices we are now being blackmailed with by the fuel companies! But I guess we wouldn't be having to listen to their humungous profits either - knowing full well that they come from us, the consumers -

And we then wouldn't be so open to being blackmailed at the will of the petroleum producing countries either. Doesn't the thought of that freedom appeal to you? It does me.

Housing Industry Association

Housing Industry Association
Hi Everyone,
Congratulations to the Maroons for a great game well-won and a sincere thanks to the Blues for a great effort. OK, so I may live in NSW but I have supported the maroons for many years.

The best footy story I've ever heard was when I was in PNG. Up there, they take our "game of Origin" football match very, very seriously. THe best yarn I heard was when one team won the annual match one year and his wife was baracking for the other. His team lost so he threw his TV out the window! Literally! Picked it up and tossed it.

OK, I'm not THAT serious but I do enjoy watching the game when it's well played like it was again last night.

Speaking of team effort, are you a member of the HIA? If not a member, its always good to stay current with what's going on in our industry.

eBay Industrial Equipment, industrial supply and agriculture equipment items on eBay.com

eBay Industrial Equipment, industrial supply and agriculture equipment items on eBay.com
Hi Everyone,

I hope you all have had a top weekend and managed to take some time off. Here in the Northern Rivers area of NSW it was a weekend of perfect weather. I went to a dog show on Saturday and saw breeds of dogs I never even knew existed! The Tibetan Husky reminded me of a cross between a dingo and a Hyena - but to each their own, hey? There were many other beautiful breeds there and it reminded me so much of how my Dad loved his sheep dogs.

The thing I enjoyed most though was the friendliness of the people. And the odd lick from a well-disciplined dog :-0

I thougt many of you may have been interested to know that you can buy Industrial goods off Ebay. If you find what you need here and are organized enough to be able to wait for it, you can get some pretty good bargains.

For all the years I have been using Ebay I'm still learning. Did you know that there are now 200,000,000 subscribers to ebay? It's really a whole new nation of people - if it was physical, it would be the 5th largest nation on earth. Amazing!

Have a prosperous week evryone!
